McCarty Pottery Receives Excellence in Visual Art Award
On Thursday, February 16th, over 500 attendees celebrated the talents of Merigold, Mississippi's, McCarty Pottery. McCarty was one of six recipients whose dedication to the arts was featured at the annual Governor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts ceremony orchestrated by the Mississippi Arts Commission.
McCarty Pottery was celebrated at the ceremony that was held at Wells Memorial United Methodist Church in Jackson. They were honored along with Louisville native, Carl Jackson (Excellence in Music), Hattiesburg educator, Althea Jerome (Arts in Education), Howard Bahr of Jackson (Excellence in Literature), WellsFest (Arts in Community), an annual festival celebrating the arts in Jackson, and the Lifetime Achievement recipient, the legendary jazz musician, Mose Allison of Tippo.
Awards are made each year to individuals and organizations for outstanding work in a wide variety of art forms including visual, performing arts, and community development through the arts. Nominations are made by the general public and a group of industry peers judge the submitted information to determine the five recipients. Nomination information is sent out by the Commission in May each year. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
The Mississippi Arts Commission is a state agency, funded by the Mississippi Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Riley Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation, the Mississippi Endowment for the Arts at the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson and other private sources. MAC is the official grants-making and service agency for the arts in Mississippi. The agency serves as an active supporter and promoter of arts in community life and in arts education.
